Samuel was born on September 7th, 2021 three weeks early due to hydrocephalus. He suffers from infantile spasms as well as a couple of other types of seizures. After going to a few different doctors to help figure out these conditions we finally started moving forward, or so we thought. On December 6th he was rushed to the hospital due to difficulty breathing. We found out he had Para-influenza. December 7th after a long night of struggling to eat or even breathe the team of doctors decided to put him on a feeding tube and supplemental oxygen. During this time Samuel started to bleed out from the nose and went into cardiac arrest. The doctors performed CPR for roughly 8 minutes to bring him back to life. That evening they decided to life-flight him to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in order to get him the care he needs. During this time we found out that he has a Vitamin K deficiency and high blood pressure from the medicines he was taking for the seizures. While in Iowa City they found out that the optic nerve on the right side never developed so he can only see out of his left eye. During our stay at UIHC, they have done multiple brain studies to try and figure out a good course of action. He has started on a KETO diet as well as a few other different meds to help keep the seizures under control. The next course of action would be to do another brain surgery to shut down parts of the brain that are causing seizure activity. On January 10th they noticed his brain started building excess pressure again which was causing excessive vomiting, mood swings, and an increase in seizures. That night the team of doctors decided to go in and place a magnetically controlled shunt on the right side of his brain. This will allow the excess fluid to drain from his brain into his stomach.
As Samuel comes close to the end of his stay at the UIHC we are getting set up for home. He will need to be on a feeding tube and oxygen. We do not know what the future holds for baby Samuel. However, we do know that over the next few years he will spend a lot of time in Iowa City for follow-up appointments and shunt revisions.
